After that, he served Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and arrived at present-day Mt. Iwade, Miyagi Prefecture before the age of 24 (1591). After Hideyoshi’s death, Date Masamune surrendered to Tokugawa Ieyasu, and at the age of 35 established Sendai Castle in Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture, becoming the first Sendai feudal lord.Masamune’s goal was to build the Sendai domain into a prosperous capital in a peaceful manner, so he devoted himself to the development of Nitta and water transportation. Date Masamune died in 1636 at the age of 70 at the Sendai feudal residence in Edo (present-day Tokyo).
